PROJECT : Playground Symphony
PERSONAL
2021
I remember the first time I went to a 4D movie theater. I saw the visual effects floating in the air, and after wearing my cinema glasses, I vividly remember how excited I was to see the virtual objects that were created by people become real and unfold before my eyes. Now, the distinction between the real and the virtual is becoming increasingly blurred. Even if it does not exist, it can be realized using tools such as AR or VR. (It’s like a potential statue sleeping in a stone.) Playground Symphony is a project that started with a small imagination in such context.
A lot of energy always coexists in the playground where children play – the sound of children's footsteps going up and down, the quiet sound of friction coming down the slide, and the creaking of a rusty rotating vehicle. Looking at the rhythm and tempo created in the space, a kind of music comes to mind. In addition, a scene where various colors are created and then removed becomes an association. It is an augmented reality proposal project like a prop that expresses the hidden energy of the playground with colors and sound.
I visited four playgrounds near my place to generate the project. With some variation, I used playground rides, such as swings, slides, seesaws, monkey bars, and steps, etc. to activate various sound sources. Sound sources turn on when someone activates the movement of each ride. I also made certain areas colorized when a child steps on them. With a group of children, the place creates a musical moment with a light touch of visual effects.
